A storm over hills.
If you are following my blog posts you know I try to chase storms from time to time. And 2023 was a dream when it comes to storms. We even had a tornado in Slovenia. And natural disasters.
But somehow, as if the weather was avoiding me, I never managed to be near most of those things. Of course, a large scale natural disaster is really hard to miss. Yet the storms are different story completely. Anyway…
One August day severe storms were forecasted. I remember looking at the radar image at thinking I should go find a nice vantage point.
I took me some time to decide whether to go or not. By the time I did, the storm was so close, I wasn’t sure I had the time to go anywhere.
In the usual fashion, I raced to a location. When I got there, the first raindrops were falling already. The wind was already blowing and there was a lot of lightning and thunder.
As was looking at my metal tripod and thought against using it. I was already standing in the middle of the hillside completely exposed. I didn’t really need another object to attract lightning, for example.
I was therefore trying to capture lightning while using my camera handheld. That meant using burst mode and a shutter speed of around 1/20s.
From memory, I took close to 700 photos in a short period of time. I managed to capture lightning on 3 of them. This is the best one.
And even this one isn’t perfect. There were some raindrops on the lens. Something resembling lens flare is visible on the left side as a result. But apart from that, I think it’s the best photo of a lightning bolt I took to date.
